This was Sri Lankas worst ever election.
The PA who won election in 2000 using various mal practices and violence
could not continue as the SLMC who was supporting the govt. left and
joined opposition.
CBK postponed the parliament before the no
confidence (Visvasa Banga) was submitted,
JVP came to the support of PA how ever a fraction led by SB dissanayaka and GL
peiris joined opposition to support Visvasa Banga Against PA.
CBK dissolved the parliament days before Visvasa Banga and a New Election was
called on Dec 5th.
The country was at war and facing a huge economic crisis under 7 years of PA
rule. The PA defectors said due to CBKs dictator rule and poor management of
country has created this situation.
PA & JVP formed an alliance (un official) to
attack UNP leader Ranil linking him with Tamil Tigers. They accused UNP of having a
secret pact with Tamil Tigers.
PA created a worst ever media campaign and terror campaign using Govt. Media,
JVP and Private Armies of Ministers.
Gampaha, Kandy, Hambantota, Puttlam, Anuradapura, Kurunagala had most of the violence. Over
50 people were dead.
The people accused president CBK for failing to restore law and order to
conduct a fair and free election.
On election day 10 supporters of SLMC and 9 Supporters of UNP were murdered
creating the worst ever case of Election History of Sri Lanka.
The UNP in a press release requested CBK to arrest a powerful minister and his
son in Kandy for these killings.
